There are a few different ways to determine roof pitch, but the most common method is to utilize the level. For this, simply extend the level until it reaches the roof's edge. Next, mark a line on the level where it meets the edge of the roof. Then, take a measurement of the distance between the mark to where the level is at the roof. This is your rise. Take a measurement from the beginning of the measurement until the highest point of the rise. The second measurement is called your run. Divide your run by your rise to determine the pitch of your roof. If, for instance, your rise is 12 inches, and the length of your run measures 24 inches, then your pitch is 12/24 or 0.50 or 50%..

If you don't have a level, you can use the tape measure. To accomplish this, you must first extend the tape measure until it is at the edge of the roof. Mark the tape measure on the edge of the roof. Then, take a measurement from the mark until where the roof's edge ends. This measurement is called your rise. Measure from the end of your tape measure to the roof's edge. The run is the second measurement. To determine the pitch of your roof simply divide your rise by your run as before.

Another way to determine roof pitch is by using trigonometry. Find two points on your roof that are at the same level and mark the two points.

To find out the slope of your roof, you may also use the level. First, find two roof points that are level with each other and make a mark at each of them. Then, put your roof level over it and locate the bubble that lies between the lines. This is your roof pitch.

What instrument is used for measuring Roof Pitch?

There are a few different instruments that can be used to measure roof pitch. A digital level, clinometer or an angle finder could be utilized.

Digital level is probably the most simple instrument to measure pitch of the roof. Simply put the level on your roof and look for the bubble that is centered between two lines on either side of the bubble. This line indicates your roof pitch.

Clinometer A clinometer can be used to determine the pitch of the roof. If you want to use a clinometer you will need someone to hold one end of the level at the bottom of the slope while you sit on the hill's top. Then, you will be able to look upwards to the level. The person who is at the bottom of the slope will tell you what number is visible within the bubble. This is the number that represents the pitch of your roof.

Angle Finder:An angle finder can also be used to determine roof pitch. Place the angle finder on the one side of your roof and then look up on the other. The pitch of your roof is the amount that is visible within the bubble.

Whatever method you use to measure roof pitch, be sure to note the measurement in order to reference it later on.

Now that you know how to calculate roof pitch, you can begin designing your next roofing project! To get started, consult an experienced roofing professional.
